What are we talking about today?

I'll get back to theme days once I find a groove of posting regularly. In the meantime, most of my posts are about some variation of books, bikes, buses, or Broadway. Plus bits about writing, nonprofits, and grief from time to time.

This blog is mostly lighthearted and pretty silly. It's not about the terrible things happening in the world, but please know that I'm not ignoring those things. I just generally don't write about them here.

The Library

Yay! Another guest blogger has stepped up to save my sanity!

Today's guest is Kate, who lives in-- you guessed it-- Lubbock. She's a homeschool mum, a non-trad student at Lubbock Christian, and all-around fun person. The first time I saw Kate and her gaggle of red-headed children, I wondered who let the Weasleys in (unfortunately (for me, not for Kate), there are no twins among them). For the record: Kate and the Kate-lets have never dressed up as the Weasleys, but I understand that is on the cards for Halloween next year.

So, Kate's views on that most sacred of places: the Library.

Am I the only one who remembers when the library was THE place to go for quiet study?  It didn’t matter how many people were in there, it was quiet.  You could focus.  Not so anymore.  At least, not in the LCU library.  THAT is where people go to chat.  Really??  With all the other places on this campus you have to pick the library??  And it’s not just the students either.  The librarians and teachers do it, too; sometimes they’re the loudest!!   So it took me a while, but I finally found a quiet place to study.  The rooms are the size of a shoebox, but I can close the door and spend a few hours soaking in the knowledge—well, sort of!!  I have to admit, it’s been a heck of a challenge.  Deciding to begin college at my age was not an easy decision, but it’s been worth it.  It’s taken a lot of work to find a balance between this and my home life, but I think we’ve finally found that balance and things are beginning to settle down.  Which is odd, since we’re coming up on finals.  The most stressful time of the entire semester, yet it’s turned out to be the easiest for me so far.

I knew going in that this would be a challenge.  What I didn’t know was just how much fun it would be.  Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love to learn.  Yes, I know, people think I’m nuts, but I do love to learn!  It drives my kids crazy.  We’ll be watching a movie and I’ll whip out the laptop and start looking something up that was mentioned in the movie!!  But it’s fun for me!  I also enjoy the interaction with the students.  I really thought I’d end up being ignored for the most part, since I’m the same age as their parents.  After all, who wants to chat with old people?  I have, much to my delight, discovered that I was wrong about that.  Some of these kids actually enjoy talking to old folks! LOL!

Anyway, if I can keep my brain from exploding, I think I’m going to enjoy this, even with the extra stress it adds to my life.  I think it’s going to be worth it!!!  No, scratch that…I KNOW it’s going to be worth it!!  I’m so glad I did this!!!  I’ve had lots of supports from friends and family…especially my kids.  Other than one or two folks who for some odd reason WANT to see me fail, everyone else has been awesome!!  Thanks y’all!!!  I really appreciate the support and prayers!!!!

Lucky you, I have to settle for the occasional weekend course to study, but that is bliss! Very envious.

Way to go, Kate! I remember when libraries were quiet places. Wonder when that changed? I'm proud of you going after your dream, and will be your first client when you get that license. Can't wait!

@Carole: I agree (since I'm back at uni myself), that it is fabulous. Sometimes I think education is wasted on the younger set (but only sometimes; most of them are delightful). :)

@Kathryn: I think it was when they installed computers. :/
