What are we talking about today?

I'll get back to theme days once I find a groove of posting regularly. In the meantime, most of my posts are about some variation of books, bikes, buses, or Broadway. Plus bits about writing, nonprofits, and grief from time to time.

This blog is mostly lighthearted and pretty silly. It's not about the terrible things happening in the world, but please know that I'm not ignoring those things. I just generally don't write about them here.

You Probably Don't Want to Read This Post

Trying again with the Green Friday posts, although today's will be more green-ish than completely green. It's also considerably more personal than usual (although I'm not sure how much more personal this blog can get). So, here's a longer-than-necessary introductory paragraph to give you time to run while you still can--this post is not for the squeamish. And also longer because Facebook only pulls the first few lines and I really don't want to give this one away too quickly. All the details after the jump.

Still here? Well, in we go. On Wednesday, I tweeted, "Women who are on bloodthinners should be exempt from certain other biological realities." I can barely keep up with this, y'all. There's less blood in war movies. Every time I shower, I reenact the aftermath of that scene in Psycho. I worked from home yesterday because I was afraid to leave my house for more than a couple of minutes. If you haven't yet figured out what this post is about, lucky you!

I'll take "Things Disposable Pads
Don't Work Well With" for $500,
Alex! Ugh, yes, one gets shredded in
each direction. The technology is
still not so good, even in 2015.
Also, running is a nightmare this week.
Anyway. A few years ago I made the switch to reusable menstrual products-- first cloth pads from Gladrags, and more recently the Moon Cup (also sold by Gladrags), and have been happy with how well they've worked. Incidentally, I'm not being paid for this post, although that would be really great--nope, I'm just sharing what works (when I'm not on bloodthinners) for me. If you have questions about these products, please DM me on Twitter & I'm happy to answer as best I can.

Unfortunately, unless I want to spend the entire day going to and from the bathroom, hardly anything works for more than a few minutes for bloodthinner periods, so last month I finally settled on a combination of the Moon Cup plus a heavy flow disposable pad on the really bad days, and then the cup plus a reusable pad once everything lightened up a bit. And I still have to change things out frequently. (I tried a regular tampon-- hahaha. Nope. Twenty minutes later it was exiting of its own accord.) So, less with the "green living" and more of the "green-ish," for now.

I wish I could offer hope for other women likewise dealing with this, but so far, I can't. In the course of writing this and then coming back later to edit and tweak, I've thought a couple of times, "Am I exaggerating?" And then my first outfit of the day only lasted about 45 minutes. No, I'm not exaggerating. It really is this bad. The best I've been able to do is hang in there for a few days and do a lot of laundry. If I find a magical solution, I'll let you know.

And the sooner I get off these bloodthinners, the better.

Have you tried Thinx underwear? It's a bit pricey, but well worth it. I bought a pair and I love them.

Oh, wow, what a cool product! I know from working in wound care that silver treatment is practically magic, so I'm sold. It would be nice to have another buffer!

I'm thankful my surgery worked for that issue for me. (Not on blood thinners but I know how bad it can be.) I had to use depends underwear a couple days of my 10 day cycle!!!

Bummer. I love a gal who experiences loss and nasty allergies. Going green helps. Hope you can abandon blood thinners soon.

Not on blood thinners...but....during the first couple of months of menomisery I had to stay home and sit on those absorbent pads you get at the hospital so I wouldn't ruin any upholstery. I feel for you girl. hope this misery is just a blip on the radar and not a permanent thing.

What's really amazing here is that women have been menstruating for millennia, we've had leave-the-house-able products since the 50s, and yet women are still having trouble with this. Have we focused all the advancement in the feminine hygiene industry on pretty packing and nice smell? Not that those are bad things, but based on the comments, texts, and Facebook messages I've gotten this morning, products still don't exist that are able to meet this real need that women have.

Yay! Love reusables! Sorry about the blood thinners though. That sounds really frustrating. I am in a great private reusable group on Facebook. Let me know if you'd like to be added.

Oh, how unpleasant. Like menstruation isn't bad enough on its own, they have to throw blood-thinners into the mix. I'm sure there are tons of women out there somewhere with the same problem, although I'm not sure where to find them.
