What are we talking about today?

I'll get back to theme days once I find a groove of posting regularly. In the meantime, most of my posts are about some variation of books, bikes, buses, or Broadway. Plus bits about writing, nonprofits, and grief from time to time.

This blog is mostly lighthearted and pretty silly. It's not about the terrible things happening in the world, but please know that I'm not ignoring those things. I just generally don't write about them here.

Teaser Tuesday #12

Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert

I assumed this meant, "Should we go out to a bar?" That's what sports fans in America would do if their team had just lost ... But Luca and his friends didn't go to a bar to cheer themselves up. They went to a bakery.

Then I will be a real Italian girl, instead of a total American who still can't hear someone call across the street to his friend Marco without wanting instinctively to yell back "Polo!"

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be ReadingAnyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

"By the time we reached the cliffs, the whale had indeed beached herself. She was huge, glistening, luminous, a pregnant shape that the surf pulled this way and that, as if she still had vigor and was not already doomed."

"'One poor man, I thought to help him as he lay in his dreadful discomfort, so i attempted to lift him...' Tilman's voice quavered and fell so low we could barely hear him. 'I did not see that his poor broken skin had cleaved to the mat he lay upon, and a whole side of him flayed off as I turned him.'"

(Yikes - I got a couple of graphic random selections! The whole book isn't quite like this!)

I'm glad that you clarified that it's not all like that... I was just thinking that it doesn't sound like my kind of book!

It's about life on Martha's Vineyard way back when, and the second quote had to do with a smallpox outbreak among the Native Americans...

Ah. That's sad.
